For additional common questions about this product, please see the .17 HMR Frequently Asked Questions page.
|Q1.||Is this product compatible with my AR-15 lower receiver?|
|All of our upper receiver assemblies will fit on and be compatible with any standard-specification AR-15 lower receiver. Our .17 HMR weapon system requires the easy installation of a few components so that the smaller magazine can fit and that the action cycles properly. An instructional video explaining this process can be viewed now. If your lower receiver is made to standard AR-15 specifications, our products will work perfectly. We do not catalog all compatible lower receiver assemblies as this is not possible. We cannot confirm whether your lower receiver assembly is considered standard or mil-spec; you should contact the manufacturer to confirm this.|
|Q2.||Isn't the .17 HMR unsafe to use in semi-automatic rifles?|
|No, it is not inherently unsafe. This is a common misconception based primarily on the reputation of a select few, failed semi-automatic .17 HMR rifle designs as well as a statement made by a popular ammunition manufacturer in response. Poor design and performance of these earlier rifles by other manufacturers resulted in relatively unsafe and unreliable weapons. The .17 HMR cartridge is not inherently unsafe to use in a semi-automatic platform. It is simply unsafe to use in a semi-automatic rifle that is not designed to fire it in a safe manner. We have proven its capabilities by utilizing correct design techniques in critical areas of the weapon. We have been manufacturing and selling our .17 HMR weapon systems since late-2011. Our .17 HMR rifle's reputation is backed by excellent reviews from professionals, dealers, and retail customers across the country. Please consider this review of our rifle featured in the May/June 2012 edition of Rifle Shooter magazine, for example.|
|Q3.||Can I order this product?|
|Yes, you can.|
|Q4.||Does this product have to ship to an FFL-holder?|
|Upper receiver assemblies are not regulated in any way by the BATFE. They are not serialized and cannot readily fire ammunition by themselves because they do not contain a fire control group. Therefore, their shipment is not prohibited by any state or locality in the United States or its territories. Please be aware of your state's regulations for certain firearms components, such as magazine capacities and muzzle devices, before ordering.|
|Q5.||Can .17 WSM or .17 Hornet ammunition be used in this weapon? Will you make a .17 WSM or .17 Hornet version?|
|The .17 Winchester Super Magnum and .17 Hornet are different than the .17 HMR and are not compatible with our weapon system. We have no plans at this time to produce any other rimfire upper receiver assemblies.|
|Q6.||If I order the upper receiver assembly now, can I order an Alexander Arms® .17 HMR lower receiver later?|
|No, we will not sell a .17 HMR lower receiver assembly individually in any way. The upper receiver kit is supplied with the adaptive components necessary to create a compatible lower receiver. Because you will already have these adaptive components, purchasing a complete .17 HMR lower receiver assembly later will leave you with an unused set of the adaptive components and result in wasted supplies and money. For any customer considering purchasing an upper assembly now and a separate Alexander Arms® .17 HMR lower receiver assembly in the future, we strongly encourage you to order a complete rifle now instead.|
|Q7.||How do I remove the handguard? How is the handguard assembled? Of what material is the handguard made?|
|Please understand that we cannot directly assist customers in the disassembly of our factory-assembled weapons. Our weapon systems are designed and built to last many years without loosening or breakage of components. The handguard is made of G10 fiberglass composite material and is permanently-affixed to the barrel nut. The handguard is not made of aluminum or carbon fiber.|
|Q8.||Does the .17 HMR use special AR-15 parts that are installed in special ways?|
|The Alexander Arms® .17 HMR weapon system does feature some proprietary components, but is essentially an AR-15 type upper receiver assembly. The barrel, bolt, and buffer components are unique and specific to this specific weapon system. The adaptive components, such as the buffer spacer and magazine block, are specially-made for this system. The installation of these components is quite easy and can be seen in our instructional video.|
|Q9.||Can I order this product without a certain part installed? Can I order only certain components of this weapon, such as the barrel?|
|We do not produce or sell incomplete weapon systems or stripped components of weapons. All weapons are sold as described: 100% complete, fully-functional, and fully-tested assemblies.|
|Q10.||Does this product include a bolt and carrier group?|
|As you see in the product description and other locations in the Online Store, this weapon system and all weapon systems we produce are 100% complete. We do not produce or sell incomplete upper/rifle assemblies. Please also note that this weapon does not feature a typical AR-15 bolt/carrier configuration; these components exist in the Alexander Arms® .17 HMR upper receiver as one, singular part, called the .17 HMR bolt.|
|Q11.||Will Alexander Arms® build a custom weapon, component, or option for me?|
|We do not build custom weapons, components, or options. All available products, parts, and options can be found in the Online Store. If an item you wish to purchase is not displayed, it is not produced, sold, or offered by Alexander Arms®.|
|Q12.||What level of accuracy will this weapon achieve?|
|This product is not provided with an accuracy guarantee. However, customers commonly report sub-MOA accuracy with all of our weapon systems.|
|Q13.||Can I purchase magazines with a higher capacity?|
|We do not yet produce or sell magazines with a capacity other than 10 rounds. If and when such a magazine is produced, you will immediately be able to order it here in the Online Store.|
|Q14.||What is the largest diameter of the .17 HMR barrel?|
|The largest outer diameter of the .17 HMR barrel is 0.800 inches.|
|Q15.||Does the .17 HMR bolt lock open?|
|No, the .17 HMR AR-15 weapon system does not feature the ability to lock the bolt open after the last round is fired. The design of the weapon prevents the inclusion of this feature. It cannot be retrofitted or added.|
